CANYON COTTAGE

Canyon Cottage was an independent, collaborative project for the 2023 Tiny House competition presented by Volume Zero. The house is set in Canyon Dam, CA, which was left in ruins due to the 2021 Dixie Fire. This project recognises the fire’s economic impact and proposes a solution towards rebuilding by accommodating both commercial and private residential spaces within a tiny home. The unit comprises three “bays” offering two private spaces and a semi-commercial-use central zone. This layout allows residents to adapt their living spaces to their needs and potentially pursue entrepreneurial ventures like a coffee stand. The face of the commercial zone is equipped with a movable screen that allows for a service area when opened and privacy when closed. The design also promotes prefabricated CLT construction and a Ground Frame Saddle Foundation system. This allows for lower costs as well as easier assembly and relocation. Its modularity also allows for future expansion and adaptation as the town slowly gets back on its feet.
