ONE : ONE

This is a group project that was conducted in the Yucatan state, Merida, during a summer abroad study to Mexico. The project entailed using adaptive reuse techniques on an abandoned polymer factory and transform it into a facility that supports and enhances the future of Merida for the coming decade. The factory was converted into a mixed used lived space where local artist and craftsman could live and work, while also having a space to sell their craft in a mercado setting. Many adaptive reuse strategies, such as locally sources materials, preservation of old facades, and selective demolition, were incorporated during the designing process.

In addition to adaptive reuse strategies, many design elements were adpapted and applied which were influenced by the works of Luis Barragan. Large windows and skylights were used to maximize the amounty of natural light that enters the building, and stained glass window frames were applied in order for visitors and residents feel the difference when moving from one space to another.
